2.) A mixture that clearly does not have the same properties throughout is called a heterogenous mixture. A mixture that has the same properties throughout is called a homogenous mixture

3.) Most heterogenous mixtures are easy to separate. To separate oil-and-vinegar mixture, you can simply let it stand for a while then pour off the layer of oil. Another way to separate a heterogenous mixtureis to dissolve one or more of the substances in water. A mixture of salt and sand can be separated in this way. The salt will dissolve in water and the sand will settle out. Then the solution of salt and water can be poured off.

Section 6-5
Checkpoint
1.) The difference between a physical change and a chemical change is a physical change is when no new substances are formed. A chemical change is when, new substances, with different properties, are formed.

2.) Chemical changes can be slow and unspectacualar. The rusting of iron is called a chemical change. As iron combines with oxygen to form rust, there is a color change. Other chemical changes involve color changes. The ripening of fruit and the fading of clothing are two examples.

3.) element- two of more than 100 such pure substances
compounds- Pure substances that are a combination of to or more elements.

4.) We know water is a compound because it is always found to be 89% oxygen and 11% hydrogen.

5.) Thousands of experiments have shown that each compound contains a definite percentage by mass of the elements that make it up. The results of these experiments are stated as the law of definite proportions: A compound consists of two or more elements combined in definite percentages by mass.

Section 6-6
Checkpoint
1.) When a substance reacts wit oxygen, releasing heat and light, the process is called combustion. Combustion is a chemical change. Oxygen and the combustible substance form other substances int he process. An example of somethings that would be combustible would be wood, because it burns, it could be used a fuel, even furniture.

2.) The consumption of heat and smoke and the consumption of oxygen are three reasons why fires are dangerous.

3.) If someone clothes catch on fire something you can do to put the fire out is to lie down and roll; or wrap the body in blanket.

4.) If an oil fire starts on the stove some thing you can do to put it out is to smother the fire; or use a fre extinguisher.

Understanding the Chapter

Vocabulary Review
1.) The state of matter that has no definite volume or shape is mass.
2.) The kilogram is a unit of volume.
3.) An element is a pure substance that cannot be changed into a simpler pure substance.
4.) The temperature at which a substance freezes is also its liquid.
5.) The density of water is 1 g/mL.
6.) The solubility of a certain substance is 32 g per 100 g of water at 20 degrees C.
7.) When steam comes into contact with a cold surface condensation occurs.
8.) A compound is a pure substance that can be broken down into two or more simpler sustances.
9.) The rusting of iron is the example of chemical change.
10.) The freezing of water is an example of physical change.
11.) The change from a liquid to a gas without boiling is evaporation.
12.) A salad is obviously a solid.
13.) Matter us defined as anything that takes up space and has mass.
14.) A mixture in which the smallest particles of two or more substances are evenly distributed is mixture.

Know the Facts
1.) The temperature at whuchwater changes to seam is its boiling point.
2.) The standard unit of mass is the kilogram.
3.) A liquid has definite volume, but no definite shape.
4.) The solubility of oxygen in water decreases when the water temperature increases.
5.) An equal-arm balance is normally used to measure mass.
6.) The solubility of a solid in water usually inceases as the temperature of the water increases.
7.) Ice floats on water because it has a lower density than water.
8.) A solid may precipitate from solution when the solution is warmed.
9.) A mixture that hs the same properties throughout is homogenous.
10.) A mixture is made up of two or more elements combined in definite percentages by mass.
11.) A fire can be put out by adding carbon dioxide.

edited september 30, 2004;
everything just really sucks right now. im a big ass.. if marlon leaves me i think im gonna chill down at guam.. i think running away from your problems is the easiest way out.. i mean its better than trying to fuking solve them.. besides i was gaaay at math anyways

LAST ENTRY? MAYBE.. still thinking.

2.) Few trees grow in the grassland biome. Grasses, such as wheat, corn, and barley, are the dominant vegitation. Most of the world's grain crops are grown on what used to be wild grasslands. Parts of the grassland biomes are known as the "breadbaskets" of the world.
3.) Large numbers of herbivores make thier home in the grassland biome. Harvest mice prairie dogs, and ground squirrels eat the seeds and leaves of grassland plants. They live in underground burrows, protected from coyotes, badgers, snakes, and owls that hunt them. Antelopes and wild buffalo were once the dominant grassland mammals. They have been replaced by domesticated sheep and cattle.
4.) Because most of the world's grain are grown on what used to be wild grasslands.
5.) Zebras, gazelles, and antelopes.

Section 5-7

1.) Biome is a term used to describe land areas with particular climate and communities. Since oceans are water environments with no definable climate, they are not usually called biomes. Oceans do, however, contain a very large variety of life. Each species has adaptations that enable it to live in one of the life zones in the ocean.
